The Farmer’s Warning

The Farmer’s Warning

The first person I called after Juliano said yes was the farmer I’d been buying from for three years. He’s a true salt-of-the-earth type. At the time he had no website checkout cart, no subscriptions, no social media. He didn’t even keep my card on file—I had to call and read it off every two weeks. But he grew the best fruit and took pride in doing things right. He wasn’t chasing a flashy startup dream but he was the only one we trusted to grow miracle berries at the quality we needed.

I called to share the news—Juliano was in and we were ready to give the berry a shelf life without changing what made it special. I thought he’d be excited. Instead, he paused, then gave me a reality check.

He said people had been trying to preserve the miracle berry for the last 3decades and failed every single time. I wouldn’t be stepping on his toes but he wanted to remind me it could be a massive waste of time and money. He wasn’t trying to crush my dream—just make sure I knew what I was walking into.

That should’ve scared me. Maybe it did for a second. But mostly, it lit a fire. Challenge accepted, I thought. I thanked him and said plain and simple: we’re going to be the next ones to take a crack at it.

What came next? A lot of trial and error. We had no lab and no big budget. We did have passion, faith, and a growing list of what didn’t work. But somehow, that was enough.

Next week, I’ll share what happened when we finally found someone who said they could help—an angel disguised as a purveyor of pies.

Now, this might be a hot take too early on, but in my opinion, pizza toppings are unlimited—except when it comes to pineapple. Sorry my Hawaiian friends, but pineapple is not invited to my favorite savory meal.

Maybe it’s because I love pineapple so much on its own. Never grilled it, salted it, or seasoned it. But now I had my own test: could the berry take my favorite fruit to the next level?

I had high hopes. The miracle berry never let me down with grapefruit, lemonade, or fruit sherbet. But was pineapple sour enough? I’d always seen it as sweet—would it even work?

I grabbed one during my usual green juice and tart yogurt haul. I noticed my basket was full of healthier stuff but each thing would give me that sweetness I craved.

Time for the test. I let the pulp coat my tongue for 30 seconds and bit in. OMG. Somehow, pineapple got even better. It tasted like pure candy from the sugar store—but not in a fake or overwhelming way. I felt like taking pineapple for long walks on the beach, whispering it sweet nothings and planning adventures together.

Okay, maybe a little dramatic—but I really did fall more in love with pineapple that day.

Next week, I’ll share another sweet fruit I didn’t think could improve—but did. You won’t want to miss it.
