While launching Nature’s Wild Berry, I found that the miracle berry likes to grow in zone10, which exists in parts of California and parts of Florida. But if you don’t know, Florida’s natural rainfall has become a sustainability talking point — especially as California kept breaking drought records year after year.
The farm is about as far from Santa Monica as the country gets, right in the middle of Florida’s agricultural south. That meant it rained. Hard. Usually once a day, minimum. I grew up in Florida, so I was used to it but it was Juliano’s first time. If you can imagine Tarzan stepping into the jungle for the first time—completely wide-eyed—you’ve got a pretty good picture of what I was dealing with.
As the tour of the farm kicked off, the rain came down fast. We took cover in what was becoming the food processing room. It was wiped down, spotless but the freezer dryer—our missing piece—was on its way. We were buzzing. Then I looked around, saw the open walls, the power socket, then had a realization that hit harder than the rain.
We forgot about hurricane season. How could I forget?
I remember Hurricane Andrew as a kid. It didn’t just make an inconvenience, it brought devastation. Rebuilding took years. And here we were, investing in expensive equipment, flying cross-country, lining up freeze-dryers in one of the stormiest regions in America. What had we done?
As a kid I was allowed to drink coffee at church, which meant I was allowed to add some coffee to my cup of sugar. I remember all the extra sugar on the bottom of the cup and thinking, "Good thing I had all that, definitely needed it!"
I never in a million years thought I'd drink black coffee but I'm years into this trying the berry on everything, why not coffee? I used my brother's Jaybird Coffee to get a chocolate truffle flavor but let the miracle berry coat my tongue for 30 seconds first.
Wow, I thought as I tasted my sugar-less coffee, I’m never going back. It’s not trying to be sugar and make it sweet but it does curb the bitterness a lot and lets you taste the best part of the coffee! Next week I’ll share a hack that I bet you’ve heard of but haven’t thought of trying with the berry!
