The Small Jar With a Big Legacy
We launched on Amazon Vine with the $5 intro pack, but it wasn’t moving. No matter how many times I brought it up, I couldn’t get anyone I knew to buy it. I even offered to pay friends back but they still wouldn’t go for it.
It never crossed my mind that I might be trying too hard because I didn’t have time to reflect. Pressure was mounting and pausing for a minute felt like a luxury we couldn’t afford.
We were inventory rich and cash poor. Juliano warned our bank account would dip into the red within weeks. If we wanted Amazon shoppers to give us a shot, we had to bring the price per berry way down. The answer was a multi-pack that offered each serving for under a dollar, which was enough to double the value of the tablets.
Our solution was a 60serving wide-mouth jar priced at $59.99. It fit in your hand, protected the berries and kept them portable. We couldn’t wait on labels to be shipped so we made, cut and applied the first ones ourselves.
March 23, 2017 is a day I’ll never forget. It was the first time our Amazon jars went live and we averaged a sale every half hour without any PPC. After all this time of struggling, I finally felt like there was a place for us to start growing.
I called it the “small jar” to make the price feel accessible and hint that bigger sizes were coming. As fate would have it, that small jar wouldn’t last long but it saved us when we were staring into the abyss. If it did nothing else, that alone makes it legendary.
And to be real, if it weren’t for the tablet companies paving the way with awareness or the early Amazon shoppers seeking out the actual fruit, we probably wouldn’t be here eight years later. I’ll share what happened next week as the small jar fades into history.
Now, onto the next flavor test…
I talk about my extended family a lot because that’s where I did my best eating. My grandma’s recipes were intimidating as a kid, but when she served fruit, it was always peak season and perfectly ripe. That’s how I remember her and her kiwi selection.
She was a peeler extraordinaire. Her knife would whip around a kiwi so fast, the fruit would be sliced and bite-sized before you finished chewing the last piece. So, for this test, I did it just like her. Only this time, I let Nature's Wild Berry coat my tongue for 30 seconds before tasting.
And wow. The way kiwi tastes on the berry is almost indescribable. Sweet, juicy and everything you want. If you’re one of the lucky ones who’s not allergic, try this combo ASAP. You will not regret it.
Next week I’ll share my first time pairing the berry with a fruit that might be the most American of them all, also inspired by my grandma’s unparalleled hospitality.
